2017 : A Summer Day at Lone Mountain Ranch
Summer is fast-approaching Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky, Montana! We are excited for another warm and wonderful season of horseback riding, hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking, and trips to Yellowstone National Park and the Gallatin River.
As we plan for June – October, we’ve been reflecting on what our first summer was like on the ranch: waking with the sunrise to beat the rush to breakfast and getting to know new staff and guests who were destined to become lifelong friends. Being able to make a living while surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains has always been our idea of heaven, and we are thankful every day for the opportunity.
We thought some of you might be interested in a sneak peek of what this summer holds for Lone Mountain Ranch. Here’s what you can expect during your visit!
When you arrive, don’t be shy about asking for a quick tour around the ranch. Even guests who have been coming for years like to get re-acquainted with the grounds, especially since we have new activities, events, recreational venues, and even new horses almost every year. As a proud member of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World program, we pride ourselves not only our beautiful surroundings and authentic accommodations, but also on her first-class service. We are known for having the best fly fishing in Montana, the best horseback riding in Big Sky, and the best place to stay when visiting Yellowstone National Park.
In addition to getting the latest updates on our summer recreation, you’ll definitely want the low-down on our brand-new restaurant and saloon, Horn & Cantle. There’s a reason Horn & Cantle is known for its “on-the-range classics, just off the beaten path.” Executive Chef, Eric Gruber, serves elevated “frontier fare,” bringing local flavors and produce together in inventive yet approachable dishes. Your mouth will water for menu items like Coffee-rubbed Rocky Mountain Elk Chops with Huckleberry Ancho Chile Sauce, Crisp-skinned Montana Trout with warm heirloom potato, fennel and baby root vegetable salad and the delectable Pickle-Brined Fried Redbird Chicken with cheddar biscuits, buttermilk mashed potatoes and red-eye gravy. Horn & Cantle’s extensive cocktail, beer and wine menu reflects the local flavor, with whiskey flights featuring Montana-crafted whiskey and cocktails like the Lone Mule, featuring Montana Moonshine white whiskey, smoked apple puree, sage syrup, and ginger beer. Make your reservation with us at the front desk, on OpenTable, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Once you’ve made your dinner plans, you’ll probably be ready to work up an appetite. One of the many recreational opportunities available to you each day of your stay is a trip to Yellowstone National Park, located only 18 miles from our ranch. In fact, the ranch is in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the world. Our guides will take you on a tour customized for your interests plus hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, and fly fishing excursions into the Yellowstone backcountry and Gallatin River. In the summer, we also offer canoe trips on Hebgen Lake, wildflower hikes, and trips to the Petrified Forest. You can also ask us to arrange mountain biking and regular cycling tours through the park.
Summer of 2017 is particularly exciting for the YNP area because of the approaching Solar Eclipse on Aug 21. During the total solar eclipse, the Moon’s “umbral shadow” will move across the United States, from (Oregon to South Carolina) in about 90 minutes. Many astronomy lovers and adventure travelers have already booked their trips to the predicted path of the moon’s “umbral shadow,” where the “totality” of the eclipse (the Moon completely blocking the Sun) will be viewable for two and a half minutes. Lone Mountain Ranch is planning a very special Solar Eclipse package and event for our guests that weekend. If you’re interested in rare, cosmic events and the thrill and beauty of the outdoors, stay tuned for a more detailed announcement coming soon.
After checking out Yellowstone National Park, you may want to meet our stable of happy horses and wranglers. We have horseback riding and trail tours available for all levels, including kids. Talk to our wranglers about our daily and weekly rides, such as the Twilight Ride and Ride & Fish at an alpine lake.
Alpine lakes are “high-mountain lakes” that were carved into the mountains by glaciers. Known for their sparkling and breathtaking beauty, alpine lakes offer a multitude of recreational opportunities. Take a few moments to look out in silence upon the shores of the icy blue freshwater, beneath the clear skies. Breathe in the fresh mountain air. Experience nature with all of your senses. (If you’re interested in customizing your own riding and trail experience, we are happy to design something to fit you and your family’s needs).
Speaking of family – you’ll be thrilled to hear that Lone Mountain Ranch has the best kids’ program in Big Sky! Designed specifically for the curious and adventurous, ages 6-12, our Kids Program offers a variety of activities each and every day, including fly fishing, arts and crafts, rock-climbing, scavenger hunts, teepee painting, hiking and even a sleepover in camping tent. Your children will make unforgettable memories through discovery, fun activities, and a breathtaking environment. Despite the many opportunities that Lone Mountain provides for fun, many of our guests cite the Kids Program as being the cherry on the top of their Big Sky sundae. It gives even the youngest members of the family the chance to make special memories to last a lifetime.
While your young ones become more acquainted with the great outdoors, you can enjoy an adventure designed for adults. Our guides and wranglers are experts in navigating even the most challenging of paths in Montana and Yellowstone National Park. Overnight camping and accommodations can be arranged, too. We will also be hosting our first-ever adults-only adventure weekend this September, with a focus on challenging recreational activities and an over-21 Oktoberfest-style party at the Horn & Cantle. Make arrangements for your kids to stay with their grandparents so you can take a week to relax and explore all that Big Sky has to offer.
As you can imagine, you will be ready to hit the hay pretty hard after a day of adventure at Lone Mountain Ranch. Luckily, you’ve chosen the absolute best place in Big Sky to hang your hat. Each of our unique and authentic private cabins (ranging from one to six bedrooms) are tucked into the pines along North Fork creek. Each cabin features Lodgepole pine furniture, featherbeds, patchwork quilts, a private bath, and a record player with some local favorites (and yes, we have complimentary WiFi, too!) The cabins have a wood-burning stove and electric heat, too, but you won’t need it in the summertime. Relax on the luxury linens and drift off to a deep, mountain-air inspired sleep. Tomorrow will be another big day at the ranch, starting with a home-cooked breakfast at the Horn & Cantle!
We hope we’ve gotten you excited about what’s to come this year. Our summer schedule is packed with lots of activities, such as our annual 4th of July celebration, and our first-ever Cowgirl Up! Week for moms and daughters (and sisters, aunts, cousins, grandmothers, and friends), so be sure to make your reservation soon.
